Peru climb back and take away win from Russia

Juncos, Puerto Rico, September 18, 2015 - A scrappy Peruvian side showed Russia that they were not going to stop them from getting a chance for the fifth place. In the end, Peru won over Russia 3-1 (12-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22) at a court full of Peruvian fans.

Angela Leyva with 18 points, Maguilaura Frias and Coraima Gomez with 15 kills each carried Peru to the win. As for Russia, Anna Lazareva and Angelina Sperskaite had 17 and 14 points respectively.

The Russian team dominated Peru completely in the first set and had an easy road to win the set 25-12 over a poor defense and a bad service from the Peruvian players, but the game was far from decided.

The second set changed the flow of the game as Peru took over the match and attacked effectively scoring a great lead over the Russian team who made many mistakes. The great blocks from the Peruvian players as well as Angela Leyva’s and Maguilaura Frias spikes gave their team the win of the second set 25-21.

Peru regained their confidence for the third set and flawlessly won over Russia 25-16 with a line of strong spikes from Frias, Gomez and Leyva. At the fourth set, when Russia seemed to have regained some power with great points from Lazareva and Sperskaite, defence was the key for Peru to win 25-22 and seal the game.
