Welcome to stunning Puerto Rico for the 18th edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Under 20 World Championship!
The Women’s Under 20 World Championships is one of the most historic FIVB competitions, first established in 1977.
While hosts Puerto Rico have staged FIVB World League and NORCECA events many times before, this is the first time that the Women’s Under 20 World Championship is being held here – and I know that the athletes and fans are delighted to be enjoying their sport in such an idyllic location.
This phrase “for the first time” feels like it is becoming the FIVB catchphrase as every season we continue to bring volleyball to new markets around the world.
This makes it an incredibly exciting time for world volleyball, as taking events to new host nations means that we can add to our global volleyball family and inspire people of all ages in every region to watch and play our beautiful game.
The top 16 women’s teams in this category are here for over a week representing every FIVB Confederation and – with the reputation this competition has for always delivering the next up-and-coming female volleyball stars – it is definitely one to watch!
I am sure that great things will be expected from current champions China as they take to the court, but in sport, as in life, nothing is for certain and there is all to play for!
I look forward to yet another exciting week of competition with you all!
