Puerto Rico outlast Mexico and smile again in home soil

Maunabo, Puerto Rico, September 18, 2015 - Moving to Maunabo, home favourites Puerto Rico netted their second win of the competition with a well-earned 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 25-19) over Mexico and now they will go for the 13th place of the final standing.

Local side was headed by Dariana Hollingsworth and Nelmarie Cruz, both leveled with 14 points apiece. Hollingsworth blasted five aces in that total. The best scorer of the game was on the other side of the net, as Fernanda Rodríguez charted 18 kills for Mexico.

Puerto Rico achieved some moments of brightness during the first two sets, led by Hollingsworth’s spicy serves and with a good defensive job from Cruz, who also scored with counterattacks. Mexico could only answer with Rodríguez, as captain Fernanda Bañuelos was well held by the host players.

However, Mexico grabbed a quick lead on the third, as Bañuelos improved her numbers and Rodríguez followed her to pace their side to a global 2-1 in sets. Nevertheless, the match regained its flow right after, with local serves creating a new batch of Mexican doubts and pushing Puerto Rico to the victory.
