Peru upset China in a vivid match and grab second round ticket

Maunabo, Puerto Rico, September 12, 2015 - Peru made history as they booked a pass into Women’s U20 World Championship top eight group with a close 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 27-25) win over defending champions China in Maunabo.

The Peruvian team worked out a strong offensive strategy that guaranteed them a difficult yet valuable victory over last gold medalists China, who now are on danger as they need to win on Sunday to stay on track.

Maguilaura Frías was Peru’s top scorer obtaining 18 points, followed by captain Angela Leyva who uncorked 15. On the other side of the net, Chinese Hu Mingyuan and Zhang Qian were tied with 12 points, with the latter pulling out 7 stuff blocks.

Besides, Peru had an extra player as the crowd was again there to support the girls. Peruvian fans were at the edge of their seats when the score showed a 25-25 tie in the last period, and then exploded in joy with the victory of their favourites.
