Peru to warm up in the Dominican Republic

Peru will compete in FIVB Volleyball U20 World Championship Pool B in Puerto Rico from September 11 to 19

Lima, Peru, September 2, 2015 - The Peruvian national team will prepare for their participation in the FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship from September 11 to 19 by playing several friendlies against the Dominican Republic.

The team will arrive in the Dominican Republic on Thursday, where they will prepare for the World Championship before travelling to Puerto Rico.

Natalia Málaga, coach of the Peruvian side, said the team is almost the same as the one that competed and finished fourth at the U18 World Championship two years ago.

“This tournament will serve as a gauge to see how much we have grown during that period,” Málaga said. “Taking part in the U23 World Championship was part of our training process and we know this new competition will be a tough one but we have been working and improving day after day.”

Ángela Leyva, captain of the team, said this will be “an opportunity to show our growth since our last World Championship and now we go with better preparation and confidence. We are 100 percent committed to achieve better results.”

Besides Leyva, the team includes Maguilaura Frías, Coraima Gómez, Rosa Valiente, Nair Canessa, Shiamara Almeida and Cristina Cuba as spikers,  Yomira Villacorta and Dayana Rojas as setters, and libero Nicole Abreu.

They will be joined in Puerto Rico by Diana de la Pena and Katherine Regalado, who are currently playing with the senior team at the FIVB Women’s World Cup in Japan.

Peru will compete in Pool B along with teams from Serbia, China and Mexico.
