Brazilian Drussyla Costa celebrates the victory

Gurabo, Puerto Rico, September 15, 2015 – Drussyla Costa produced a match-high 21 points to lead Brazil to a 3-1 (25-11, 25-22, 25-27, 25-20) victory over Italy in a match of Pool E for the 1-8 positions at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 world Championship.

Lorenne Geraldo contributed 15 points as Brazil benefitted from 35 errors made by Italy. Paola Egonu led Italy with 16 points and Sara Bonifacio added 11 in the loss.

Brazil dominated the first set from start to finish playing great defence touching a lot of balls at the net and counter-attacking effectively. The Brazilians led 8-4 and 16-5 and went on to claim the set 25-11 with Costa landing a bomb and Silva scoring with a touch down the middle.

It was a close battle in the early going of the second set with Brazil in front 8-7. Brazil widened the difference to 16-11 but Italy strengthened the defence at the net and narrowed the difference to 20-18. The Brazilian side finally won 25-22 taking advantage of Italian errors.

Italy improved dramatically in the third set with good serves and terrific blocking. The Italians led 8-1 and 16-8 at the technical pauses.  Brazil came back on the shoulders of Conceicao to even the score at 18-all. Brazil led 24-22 but Italy tied and won 27-25 with a block by Bonifacio against Geraldo.

Brazil led 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical stops of the fourth set and stayed on the same path clinching the set 25-20 with a block by Ferreira against Guerra.
