Cuba win 3-0 over Egypt

 

Cuba's Carmela Massip stood out on defence and also as attacker

Gurabo, Puerto Rico, September 18, 2015 – Cuba advanced to the match for the 13-14 positions following their 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-17) victory over Egypt at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship on Friday afternoon.

Anet Alfonso and Carmela Massip finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively, in the victory, while Ailama Cese added 11, including five blocks. Mai Moustaffa was the top scorer for Egypt with 10 points.

Cuba outscored Egypt in spikes 44-24 and held a slight 10-8 margin in blocks. Cuba prevailed 25-23 in the close first set when Alfonso scored with a big spike following her block against Almohandes at 23-all. Alfonso had 6 points in the set while Moustaffa finished with 7 for Egypt.

The Caribbean side took a 16-15 lead in the second set combining parlaying spikes by Massip and Alfonso and continued in front the rest of the way. Herrera closed it 25-18 with an ace.

Cuba dominated the third set with solid blocking and hard spikes against a deflated Egypt. The Cubans led 8-6 and won the next eight points for a 16-6 advantage. Cuba won 25-17 despite several late errors.
